Ayasdi Team

Gunnar Carlsson

Gunnar Carlsson is one of the most renowned mathematicians in the world and a co-founder of Ayasdi. He has an undergraduate degree from Harvard University and doctorate from Stanford, where he was Chair of the Department of Mathematics from 1995 - 1998.

Over the past 35 years, Gunnar has taught at University of Chicago, University of California, Princeton University, and since 1991, Gunnar has been a professor of mathematics at Stanford University, where he has been a thought leader in a branch of mathematics called topology, the study of shape. In the theoretical sense, topology has been around since the 1700’s, but Gunnar pioneered the applied use of topology to solve complex real world problems starting in the late 1990’s. In the early 2000’s, this work led to $10M in research grants from the National Science Foundation (NSF) and DARPA to study the application of Topological Data Analysis (TDA) to problems of interest within the U.S. government. In 2008, based on the success of these efforts, Gunnar, along with two other Stanford mathematicians, co-founded Ayasdi.

Gunnar is married, has 3 grown boys including two sons who are mathematicians, and lives in Palo Alto.

Most recently, he was VP Solutions and Integrations at NetApp, focused on innovative new marketing and selling approaches, including FlexPod, a joint solution effort between NetApp and Cisco that reached a market-leading position in virtualized, converged infrastructure. Previously, he led the product, alliance and solution marketing function at NetApp during the period when the company grew from $1B to $5B in revenues. He also led the HP9000 Unix/RISC Server marketing function at HP during the period the business reached $3B in annual revenues.

Patrick holds an M.B.A. from Harvard University, and an M.S. and B.S. from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

Harlan Sexton

Co-Founder and Vice President, Research

Harlan Sexton is a co-founder of Ayasdi and VP of the Research team whose main effort is to make Topological Data Analysis faster and more scalable.

In 2004, after more than 20 years in applied research and software development, he joined Gunnar Carlsson to work on the DARPA TDA project to apply topology to real world problems. Before this, Harlan spent a decade at Oracle where he was part of the 5-person team that implemented a Java Virtual Machine (JVM) for the Oracle RDBMS. One of the innovations in the Oracle JVM was a production-quality stack-conservative garbage collector that allowed tight integration between Java and the database. Parts of the code he wrote there still run hundreds of millions times per day, as Oracle databases carry out routine financial and retail transactions throughout the world. Earlier in his career, Harlan worked at Lucid, where he took the lead on Lisp performance and interoperability and wrote an incremental C/C++ linker that was later deployed by Sun Microsystems, and at Object Design, where he was an architect and implementer of an object-oriented database for Smalltalk.

Harlan received his Ph.D. in Mathematics from Stanford University, and owns more than 30 software patents. He also has a B.S. in Mathematics from Ohio State, is married with 2 grown children, and when not inventing things, enjoys the game of golf.

Gurjeet Singh

Co-Founder & CEO

Gurjeet Singh is Ayasdi's co-founder and CEO.

He developed algorithms for Topological Data Analysis (TDA) and their applications during his graduate work as a part of a DARPA funded research project at Stanford. This led to the creation of Ayasdi’s core technology and machine-learning algorithms. Gurjeet has published numerous academic papers in top mathematics journals and computer science conferences. Before he started Ayasdi, he worked at Google and Texas Instruments.

Gurjeet holds a B.Tech. from Delhi University, and a Ph.D. in Computational Mathematics from Stanford University. He lives in Palo Alto with his wife and son, and develops multi-legged robots in his spare time.
